Top 10 Video Games For 2019

You should enjoy this kind of excitement from me for awhile. My next posts… are not going to be pleasant ones. Well, I dunno about spoiling or anything, but…

(VG Characters I hate/don’t like (title pending))

That’s what I said. True. But… do you know what time it is? It’s nearing the end of 2018, not to mention Christmas!

Talking about something negative like that during Christmas seems distasteful, so let’s talk about something else more positive. Since 2018 is almost at its end… let’s see what we have for 2019. As usual, the gaming scene is still going in strong, and honestly they do look promising. I’ve gotten some of the games I hyped for last years, some of them were really as good as I hyped, some of them… not so much. But enough about that.

Once again, I am going to list the Top 10 Games that I am hyped for in 2019. There may be repeats, because some of them got delayed into this year. But even so… Let’s just do this! Here’s my Top 10 Games For 2019, which might not fit well with the public opinion, but it’s still my own opinion!

Oh hey, it’s a reused picture, since this game is also gonna be released in 2019, but not in my list.

Number 10

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 (Switch)

It is to my big surprise to see the Marvel Ultimate Alliance series to return, it’s one of the modern Marvel arcade beat’em ups I enjoyed. Even if the second game took a bit of a hit of my interest thanks to roster choices, I’ve played a moments and the combat is as solid as ever. And thank goodness of the addition of at least Wolverine and hopefully the X-Men even on the first screenshots alone, here’s a hoping you don’t follow Capcom’s missteps at Marvel Vs Capcom Infinite. And… I do not mind Team Ninja. They’re not defined with Dead or Alive fanservice alone. I should know, I’ve played Nioh.

But I’ve spoken enough. So yeah, bring on the Marvel arcade shenanigans!

Number 9

Resident Evil 2 Remake (PS4/Xbox One/PC)

Well, speaking of Capcom, here’s one of the remakes I’ve been looking for. I’ve got a lot to catch up on the Devil May Cry saga so I don’t think I would jump straight to DMC5 hype. But THIS… a remake of one of the greatest Resident Evil installments, back when it was actually scary, not action packed blockbuster (that being said, I enjoyed 4 and 5)… and at least without the Tank Controls? Sold, man! Hopefully I’ll be able to actually finish it back to back this time.

Number 8

Judgment/Judge Eyes (PS4)

One of the unexpected series that I grew to respect in 2018 was the Yakuza series, not just its spin-off based on Fist of the North Star that made it to the 2018 list. So, revamp the basis from Yakuza stuffs into detective thriller, and what you get is Judgment/Judge Eyes. This is shaping up to be a nice spin-off of the Yakuza series that got my eyes. Of course, one of these days I need to finish the Yakuza series by myself, but playing as a detective in a Yakuza style gameplay, with possibilities of affecting the court? Well… color me interested, Sega!

Number 7

Total War: Three Kingdoms (PC)

So, thank YOU Koei Tecmo for making me interested in the Sengoku Period and Three Kingdoms era. Enough that I decided to try out and be impressed with Total War: Shogun 2. And what do you know, Sega decided to unleash a Three Kingdoms edition of Total War! Back in TWS2, there were only a few notable, unique characters per faction (just the daimyos), so it is to my pleasant surprise that Total War Three Kingdoms makes efforts to create more unique characters per faction, and also added up with a more fantastic elements to match the novels, or if you want to be more grounded, a historical mode. Overall, it looks like this is a strategy game I will be looking forward to in 2019.

Number 6

Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition (PS4/Xbox One/Switch/PC)

It was most regrettable that Tales of Vesperia was locked in the Xbox consoles for so long and the PS3 version never left Japan… but hey, at least Bandai Namco is making up for it with this. One of the most praised Tales series entries ever, to be in English. Of course I cannot wait to experience the expanded tale of Yuri Lowell first hand and see how he lived up to the praises of many. And yes, I am aware of the English dub replacement fiasco, and it’s regrettable that the legendary Troy Baker will not return for Yuri… but I’ll take it.

Number 5

Fire Emblem: Three Houses (Switch)

Oh hey look. It’s a title that’s returning from last year. Looks like Nintendo delayed this title in order to gather more income from Fire Emblem Heroes. And at last, the title and trailer has been unveiled and it looked… epic! Instead of a one man army style game, we actually get an army feel of the characters, and the three main Lord system looked terrific. There’s kind of lack of information so far, but I’m still hooked and looking forward to where this Fire Emblem goes.

Just PLEASE no controversies like in Fates… Don’t screw it up, Intelligent Systems

Number 4

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (PS4/Xbox One/Switch/PC)

Oh hey, another series that got delayed to 2019. At least Igarashi gave us Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon during the delay and after playing it and seeing Ritual’s actual demo, I’d say I’m more and more impressed and positive that the actual product will be good. This is definitely a metroidvania game that I await eagerly.

Number 3

Streets of Rage 4 (Platform unknown)

The year was the nineties. Streets of Rage was my childhood jam, and I played all three titles with absolutely zero regrets and full of satisfaction. The series never appeared again and only saw fan remakes that Sega issued a cease and desist message… Man, Sega, what were you thinking–

Of course, I cannot imagine how hyped I am with this new Streets of Rage game with upgraded graphics and from the trailer alone, looks like it’s pretty faithful to the classic beat’em up gameplay. 2019 looks like to be the time I jump back to the Streets of Rage and kick some punks’ asses!

(And what’s with Axel’s beard…? Curious…)

Number 2

Yeah, Samurai Shodown has been in a limbo thanks to Sen bombing. Nakoruru getting into KOF XIV was a highlight of SNK’s return and they did say they’re interested to revisit some of their old IP’s… And whoa whoa whoa, this new Samurai Shodown game looks sick in Unreal Engine! And the gameplay is the classic tense weapon-based video game instead of trying to rip off Soul Calibur! The classic cast is back, and it looks like they’re revisiting what made the arcade games became such classic titles with modern tools. Hopefully, this will be the title necessary to revive Samurai Shodown and other classic fighters SNK had!

Number 1

Super Robot Wars T (PS4/Switch)

I made a frigging separate blog post to announce how hyped I am about this game. An officially translated Super Robot Wars game that is not Original Generation and featuring killer combos of roster like GaoGaiGar-G Gundam-Gun X Sword, and topped with the debut of Magic Knight Rayearth!? And it comes at March!? The gameplay and strategy level might not be up to par with things like Fire Emblem, but Super Robot Wars usually delivers in weaving and combining stories out of various anime series and the gorgeous combat animation that makes you feel like watching an anime series or movie. So yeah, forgive me if I do not say a thing about more well known crossovers like Super Smash Bros or Kingdom Hearts. The throne of Video Game Crossover King is Super Robot Wars to me, and while I tend to ignore other Super Robot Wars when the roster did not click with me time to time… this is the SRW with a roster that clicks with me the most and got me hyped SO HARD for 2019 that it is without a doubt my choice for the Top game I want for 2019.

(Wait, did I just spoil a possible future list above? … Well, crud. O well, there’s gonna be explanation later)

This is ChrisX signing out. And as you read the honorable mentions, allow me to say this to you dear readers: MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Honorable Mentions

  • Devil May Cry 5: Back to the roots and not continuing that disastrous remake, but… well I think I’ve got a lot to catch up in the series before I get here…
  • Dead or Alive 6: Look, I do not mind the rampant fanservice of the series, I might even pick this up. But this year was just loaded with a lot of stuffs…
  • Granblue Fantasy Versus: Hey, it’s an ASW fighting game, of course that’s gonna be nice! Unfortunately, they picked the gacha game that I didn’t play (it’d be a different story if they do a Fate/Grand Order fighter…)
  • Fate/Extella LINK: Fate’s good. Musou’s good. Roster’s solid… although what kept me from being hyped is that they didn’t include some of my personal favorites (*cough* Brynhild *cough*)
  • Ghost of Tsushima: A Samurai game not taking place in a Sengoku Period would be interesting, here’s a wondering if I just smack the Mongols myself, or they just died in a tornado (actually a typhoon).
